Happy Birthday Cat Hat

Hi friends! Today is my BIRTHDAY! Which means a very special pattern is in order - one of my FAVORITES (I know I always say that, but I love how this one turned out) - the Party Hat! This is a fun one to make - especially if you celebrate birthday's with the fuzzy family members in your life (and I hope you do!). It's at a slightly advanced skill level ... I say slightly because it involves knitting in the round, BUT it's a quick knit with striping and those are things that make my heart skip a beat.

This pattern is in my first book Cats in Hats (out in one month - yay!) and is reprinted with permission for you to enjoy. You can visit my

for more hats, and I'll be debuting individual cat hat patterns next month!

Until then, enjoy this colorful project and please share pictures of your fuzzies rocking their birthday hats (or party hats... or anytime celebration hats...).

The Party Hat

reprinted with permission from Cats in Hats

Supplies Needed:

DK Weight Yarn, 3 Colors

A: 25 yards (I used Lion Brand Vanna's Choice in Raspberry)

B: 10 yards (I used LB Wool Ease in Fisherman)

C: 10 yards (I used LB Vanna's Choice in Mint)

Size US 7 / 4.5mm DP needles

Yarn Needle

Polyfil

Crochet Hook US F5/ 3.75mm

Pom Pom Maker (optional - I prefer to make pom poms by hand)

Instructions

Base:

Using color A, cast on 3sts, leaving a 25" tail.

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: Knit into front and back (kfb) of the first and last stitch (5sts total)

Repeat Row 1 and 2 until 15sts are on needles, ending with an increase row.

(First Ear Hole)

Row 13: K3sts, cast off 10sts, K2sts. Turn.

Row 14: K2sts, cast on 10sts, K3sts. The 3st side is the front of the hat.

(Middle section)

Knit in 16 rows in garter stitch.

(Second ear hole)

Begin second ear hole, as follows:

Row 31: K3, Cast off 10sts, K2. Turn.

Row 32: K2sts, cast on 10sts, K3sts. The second ear hole should mirror the first, so that the K3

sides match up.

Row 33: Knit

Row 34: K2tog, Knit to last 2 sts, K2tog (13sts total)

Repeat rows 33 & 34 until 3sts remain, ending on a decrease row.

Cast off, leaving a 25" tail.

To create ties, use crochet hook and 25" tail, pull a loop through each stitch on the cast off edge

(3 loops). YO, pull one loop through. CH 25. Pull end through loop tightly and snip extra yarn.

Repeat with other 25" tail.

Party Hat:

Using yarn B, cast on 30sts on 3 DP needles (10 per needle), leaving a 20" tail. Knit 2 rnds.

Rnd 3: On each needle, K2tog, K6, K2tog (24sts remain)

Rnds 4-7: Knit

Rnd 8: On each needle, K2tog, K4, K2tog (18sts total)

Rnds 9-10: Knit

Join Color A.

Rnds 11-14: Knit

Rnd 15: On each needle, K2, K2tog, K2 (15sts total)

Rnds 16-19: Knit

Row 20: On each needle, K1, K2tog, K2 (12sts total)

Join Color C.

Rnds 21-24: Knit

Rnd 25: On each needle, K1, K2tog, K1 (9sts total)

Rnds 26-28: Knit

Rnd 29: K2tog 4 times, K1 (5sts total)

Rnd 30: K2tog twice, K1 (3sts total)

Cut yarn and pull through sts on needle. Pull closed, and weave end into inside of the hat.

To finish hat:

Make a 1" pom pom using all three yarn colors. Secure to top of hat. Weave ends into the inside

of the hat and secure in place.

Lightly stuff party hat. Using the cast on tail from the hat, stitch the party hat onto the middle

section of the base. Stitch into the cast on edge of the party hat, until hat is securely in place.

Weave end through wrongside of the base and tie securely.

Voila! It's party (and picture) time!
